When our friends arrived to share our life here in Malawi with us for a few weeks we knew immediately that we needed to take them to see Amayi Bennison (Shupie) for a traditional Malawian cooking class. Shupie has been so gracious to share her culture with our family. She is also very interested in our permaculture training and takes all that she has learned home to practice and put into her family's garden. Here are some pictures of our amazing day with Shupie!

Permaculture! Mixing plants together so that they compliment each other and assist in the growing process! Shupie will be attending a training class over the next few weeks to get certified in permaculture training! This is a VERY big deal for them and it will truly change their lives for the better! When the rainy season is here there are many green vegetables. But during the dry season (now) there aren't. Shupie showed us how she dries the vegetables and then stores them to eat during this time of the year!
Here are the dried vegetables she is about to cook for us to eat!

Here are some dried berries off one of her trees. It's really more like a leaf than a berry. Hard to explain! Anyway, she is going to boil these and add a little sugar and make a juice!

Shupie's niece stopped by and Shupie put her to work washing! Do you see the grey sand over to the side? This is what she is rubbing onto the pot to scrub them down! Sand works as their brillo pad!
Here is the juice that Shupie is pouring into a pitcher! Just a little sugar and it's perfect! It tasted like apple juice to us!

What a wonderful day we had! We're so thankful for Shupie and for the heart that she has for us and her culture! It was an experience of a lifetime!
