Today is election day in Malawi. Pray for this country. Pray that the polling places and election officials are fair and honest. Pray against rigging and tampering with the results. Pray that the people's voice will be heard and that a leader will emerge who can help lead this beautiful country out of poverty, improve education, and provide a better life for Malawians everywhere. Pray for peace with whatever results do come in. We are bracing for the impact and are on our knees. We know God is ultimately in control!
This was my Facebook status today. There isn't enough room to say what I wanted. Nor is it appropriate because this is not my country. But rigging and fixed elections are the norm here. It's nearly impossible to get a seated president out of office. The past year has been full of corruption at the highest level of government. Most of the world is privy to this "Cashgate" information. A quick google search will provide more info. Unfortunately most Malawian's can't read newspapers. Most Malawians live outside the big cities in villages basically cut off from the world. And when someone gives you or your family a cow (or makes promises for such) and asks for your vote...you vote for that person.
There has been rumor that even two days before the election ballot papers pre marked with the incumbents name were intercepted. Rigging of elections is almost expected. While everyone is against it....everyone knows it will probably happen. And they work hard to try to bring this dishonesty into light. The pre marked ballots were burned but how many others made it through undetected?
As for us, we sit and wait. We loaded up with food and fueled our vehicles in order to brace for the impact. We are staying out of the city for a few days. It could get very dangerous and very hard here. But I'm thankful that my God is ultimately in control and that "in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, those who are called according to His purpose."
